Âmago, a delightful new retreat, captures the essence of Portugal’s serene countryside with a modern twist. Founded by British couple Alex and Liz Harvey, this boutique hotel is nestled in the tranquil Algarve region, where picturesque landscapes and thoughtful design come together to create a soothing sanctuary. The couple’s combined love for Portugal and dedication to hospitality shine through every detail, from the hotel’s warm and welcoming atmosphere to its distinctive aesthetic.

With Alex’s background at Locke Hotels and Liz’s passion for homemade baking, Âmago offers an intimate, personal touch to the guest experience. Their vision includes more than just providing a place to stay—it’s about creating a space for artistic inspiration and cultural connection. This is evident in their artists-in-residence programme, which has brought a unique creative flair to the hotel’s visual identity and art collection.

OUR STORY

Âmago embodies a tranquil escape where comfort, style, and a personal touch blend seamlessly. With just six rooms, the property feels intimate and exclusive, ensuring that each guest receives personalised attention. Mornings are slow and unhurried, as breakfast is served on the terrace, accompanied by the soft murmurs of the few other guests staying at the property. It’s a continental spread, thoughtfully presented, with freshly prepared eggs, pastries, and seasonal fruits. Design magazines and curated collections of art and books add an elegant yet homely atmosphere to the communal spaces, inviting you to linger over a cup of coffee. We loved starting our mornings with a healthy breakfast, poolside view, and chat.

We stayed in Room 4, which is thoughtfully designed for longer stays. The spacious bathroom, cosy kitchenette equipped with essentials, and charming little window made it feel like a true home away from home. We loved the collection of Portuguese cooking books on the shelves and the bowl of lemons picked fresh from the tree on the grounds. Evenings were spent savouring local wine and reminiscing about our day of exploring the beautiful Algarve landscape. It is just 20 minutes from Faro, and relatively easy to get around and visit towns such as Olhão and Tavira.

Alex and Liz’s presence is felt throughout the property. Whether they’re offering recommendations for local experiences or simply sharing a casual conversation, there’s a genuine warmth to their hospitality. The duo’s attention to detail and passion for Portuguese culture are evident in every element of the hotel, from the art pieces on display to the carefully sourced products in the honesty bar. Their easygoing and welcoming nature makes guests feel more like friends staying at their property rather than just visitors.

The hotel frequently hosts events and pop-ups, adding a vibrant cultural element to the guest experience. The expansive grounds offer plenty of space for future endeavours, making it not just a place to relax, but also a destination for creative inspiration and community engagement.
