Snuggly merino sheepskin liners in trend-led colours, certainly aren’t something you see every day, hence why we are excited to see such products in the fashion arena. BINIBAMBA is a new brand set up by Emma Grant and is already making quite the mark. It’s fair to say that many new parents tend to seek items for their newborns that are cosy, kind and durable. BINIBAMBA offers all of the aforementioned, in addition to a cool colour palette and all items are 100% natural.
So, why are we referring to these chic sheepskin liners here in our Lust Series? It’s because families that are fans of boutique travel, planning an escape, can be assured that little ones can stay comfy whilst travelling. The liners have supernatural healing powers, as they help keep babies cool in summer and warm in the winter. Parents don’t need to worry, as these cuddly sheepskin goodies will be practical regardless of the destination they are flying to. Simply add the liner to a pushchair or purchase the rug to lay flat on the floor of your hotel and let little ones play and feel at home. With names such as Milk, Moon and Rose, they are hard to resist. Read on to find out more about this exciting new brand.
Where are you from?
I currently live in Walthamstow. I’ve been in London for the past 12 years but originally I am from Nottingham and went to University in Bristol.
What is your design background?
I actually have little (no) design background! I studied Ancient History at University but always, from a young age, loved clothes and fashion. Apart from my strong knowledge of togas, the fashion work experience I did every summer whilst at Uni helped get me my first break and job as a BAA at TOPSHOP. I worked there for over ten years (with a short stint at Finery) and worked my way up to be Buyer on Boutique, Unique & Designer Collaborations before I finally left to go on maternity leave.
What made you start designing?
I love the whole process of creating something and there is nothing more satisfying than seeing something go from sketch to store, sell, only to pass you in the street.
What inspired you to launch Binibamba?
So many reasons ….
Sheepskin has some amazing superpowers that make it the perfect plus one for babies. It is 100% natural, hypoallergenic and thermostatic, helping babies regulate their body temperatures (something they struggle to do under 18 months). I loved using one for my son Otto when he was born and was frustrated at what was out there. Really yellowy… I saw an opportunity to give the bland world of buggy liners a fashionable spin and BINIBAMBA was born.
I have always loved being creative, developing product and over the years toyed with lots of different ideas for a brand. I always knew one day I would give something of my own a go. When my Dad passed away suddenly (an entrepreneur himself – he was always encouraging me to give it a go) I thought to myself, I need to take the plunge …what’s the worst that’s going to happen?
After the birth of my son Otto I also really wanted to feel more in control of my destiny and the timing felt right to go it alone! I think lots of women find it hard to find a balance between work and family life – the juggle is very real! It has been a hard slog getting BINIBAMBA off the ground and I wouldn’t say running your own business is less stressful (if anything it’s more) but to be able to take Otto to and from Nursery, spend time with him (I work 3 days a week and nap times and evenings) means everything and is a big part of why I started BINIBAMBA.
How would you describe Binibamba in 3 words?
Fashionable. Snugly. Sheepskin.
What materials have you used for your collection?
100% natural….all our products are made from the finest 100% merino sheepskin and are made in England – with love.
