Heritage Meets Responsibility: Inside Hanan Moser Fine Jewelry

HANAN MOSER fine jewelry stands as a beacon of sustainability and artistry in the world of luxury design. Rooted in Middle Eastern heritage and defined by a commitment to ethical practices, the brand seamlessly combines tradition with innovation. From her journey as a child of Syrian and Lebanese parents to her move to Barcelona, Hanan’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and a deep respect for the planet.

In this interview, Hanan shares how lab-grown diamonds became a cornerstone of her vision, her approach to sustainability, and the personal connections that inspire her bespoke creations. Her work is not just about crafting jewellery—it’s about telling stories, honouring heritage, and shaping a more ethical future for luxury design.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from the Middle East, with roots that deeply shape who I am today. My mother is Syrian, and my father is Lebanese. I was born in Beirut in 1984, during a night of heavy bombing. Shortly after, my parents fled the war, seeking safety first in Germany and then in Switzerland, where they applied for asylum.

I grew up in Zurich, a city that gave me stability and opportunities while my parents rebuilt our lives. Five years ago, I moved to Barcelona with my husband and two children, drawn by the city’s vibrancy, creativity, and culture. It’s here that I’ve been able to fully embrace my passion for jewelry design, combining my heritage and life experiences into every piece I create.

Describe Hanan Moser the brand in 3 words.

Empowering. Honest. Timeless.

What inspired you to start your creative journey?

In Arab culture, jewelry—especially gold—is deeply symbolic and woven into life’s most meaningful moments. Even though I was born in a time of war, by my third day, I already had my first pair of earrings. Jewellery has been with me since my earliest memories, something I gazed at with wonder, feeling its magic and allure.

Jewelry, for me, is a way to express my mood, much like perfume. Some days I feel bold and wear large earrings and stacks of rings; on others, it’s a single ring or subtle studs. One of my inspirations was to encourage women to wear jewellery unapologetically—whenever they desire, not just for a special occasion. Diamonds, too, can be worn any day; they’re not reserved for a “perfect moment” but can be part of our everyday lives, adding a touch of brilliance to any ordinary day.

Discovering lab-grown diamonds was the final spark that pushed me to create my own brand. They allowed me to blend luxury with ethical practices, a combination I truly believe in. This journey is about crafting pieces that celebrate women’s strength, resilience, and self-expression, making jewellery that empowers and resonates deeply.

What role does sustainability play in your brand?

To be honest, “sustainability” is a big word. Especially in the beginning, when you’re self-funding a brand without a big budget, it’s impossible to be 100% sustainable on every level.

For me, ethical practices mean making decisions that align with my values and worldview—choices that feel authentic and true to who I am. There are moments when compromises are necessary, like with packaging. It’s nearly impossible to create fully sustainable packaging that’s also beautiful enough to reflect the experience a client expects when investing in fine jewelry.

Lab-grown diamonds are another example. They are undeniably a more ethical and sustainable choice compared to mined diamonds—they’re gentler on people and the planet, use significantly less water, and emit less CO2. However, the process isn’t perfect yet; lab-grown diamonds still require substantial energy for production and aren’t entirely carbon-neutral. I work with suppliers like Madestones, who are certified as CO₂-neutral for the entire lifecycle of their lab-grown diamonds, ensuring that their practices align with my values.

Ultimately, I believe in progress over perfection. My goal is to continually improve while offering my clients pieces they can feel good about wearing—jewelry that combines beauty, meaning, and a sense of responsibility.

Can you share a defining moment or breakthrough in your career?

There was a moment when a client came to me with her mother’s wedding ring, asking me to bring new life into it for her own engagement. At first, I was incredibly nervous—but also deeply honoured. It felt like such a privilege that she and her fiancé trusted me with something so precious, a piece of her family’s history. Knowing that she believed her family’s heirloom was in good hands with me filled me with pride, but also with a tremendous sense of responsibility.

The idea that I was creating something she would wear every day, perhaps for the rest of her life—and might one day pass on to her own children—was both inspiring and daunting. I’ll be honest: I had sleepless nights and a constant ache in my stomach, worried I might not meet her expectations. The weight of it felt immense.

In those moments of doubt, I had to remind myself to trust in my skills and intuition. I repeated to myself: You’ve got this. You’re capable of creating something beautiful, meaningful, and worthy of her trust.

This was more than just design; it was a connection between past, present, and future.

How do you incorporate your heritage or culture into your designs?

When I started my brand three years ago, I was more cautious about incorporating my culture and background into my designs. I was still finding my footing and wanted to create pieces that appealed to everyone—a more universal approach. Looking back, I’d say I was still in the early stages of defining my voice as a designer.

Now, as my brand evolves, I’m embracing my heritage more intentionally, incorporating elements that reflect my roots. It’s a slow and thoughtful process, but it’s one I’m deeply excited about. For example, you can already see traces of my culture in the names of my pieces or in the way my designs avoid harsh edges. Instead, they feature rounded, flowing forms—much like Arabic script, which is beautifully soft and curved.

This is just the beginning. With each new piece, I aim to weave more of my story into the designs, blending tradition with a contemporary vision.

Who or what are your biggest creative influences?

Nature, flowers, and architecture are constant sources of inspiration for me. To be honest, I don’t have a strict or structured process for designing. Sometimes, I see a person and feel inspired instantly. When someone comes to me for a bespoke piece, their presence often becomes my muse—the way they speak, how they laugh, what they do, and the energy they radiate.

It’s almost instinctive; I often envision design elements that would suit them even before we finalise the details. Every piece I create feels like a reflection of the person it’s for—a way to capture their essence in a tangible, meaningful form. This fluid, intuitive approach keeps my creativity alive.

What makes your brand stand out in a crowded market?

HANAN MOSER Fine Jewelry is more than just a brand—it’s a feeling, a lifestyle, and a deeply personal experience. My clients often tell me they feel a connection to my story and my authenticity, which creates a bond of trust that’s rare in the world of luxury.

In a market where trends come and go, I focus on creating timeless, personalised jewelry that reflects each client’s unique journey. My dedication to customisation, ethical practices, and meaningful storytelling sets my brand apart and resonates with those who value intentionality and individuality.

What truly makes my brand stand out is the personal touch: clients have the unique opportunity to speak directly with me as the designer and founder. This direct connection not only ensures their vision is realised but also creates a luxury experience that goes beyond the jewellery itself. It’s about building relationships and crafting pieces that are as unique and special as the people who wear them.

Next place you want to visit?

For years, I’ve dreamed of visiting Lebanon and Syria with my husband and children. These are the lands of my roots, and I’ve longed to reconnect with their rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes.

Unfortunately, the timing has never felt right, and now it’s more challenging than ever. Still, I hold onto the hope that one day soon, I’ll be able to return—not only to explore my heritage more deeply but also to share the beauty and spirit of the Middle East with my family. It’s a journey that feels deeply personal, and I know it will be a meaningful experience for all of us.
