BERBER LODGE

Nestled amidst the awe-inspiring Atlas Mountains, Berber Lodge Marrakech stands as a testament to the enchanting beauty of Morocco. Owned and designed by Romain Michel Meniere, a French-Swiss interior designer, who sought to create a haven of tranquillity, this luxurious lodge perfectly embodies the essence of Moroccan hospitality and craftsmanship. Previous works of his include Bab Ourika, Riad Mena And Beyond, Nomad Coffee and many other private projects. As Marrakech prepares for an upcoming boom in tourism, with new hotels emerging and travellers flocking to the vibrant capital as a base to explore the country, Berber Lodge offers a serene retreat away from the bustling city, providing an ideal sanctuary for those seeking a truly immersive Moroccan experience.

The lodge has quite a hip following, influenced by features in magazines such as Conde Nast Traveller, Suitcase Magazine, Architectural Digest and more. There was even a fashion shoot for a UK brand during our stay, and within the first 5 minutes of being at the lodge, it's easy to see why. Every inch is scenic and looks picture-perfect. Expect to see globetrotters and those with a fine appreciation for understated glamour. Guests that take advantage of the remoteness of Berber Lodge before embarking on an adventure in the Atlas Mountains, quad biking or seeing historical gems like Aït Benhaddou, which sits between Marrakech and the Sahara.

OUR STORY

Serenity and beauty enveloped us when we arrived at Berber Lodge. The warm and genuine welcome from the staff immediately made us feel at home. Upon arrival, the team didn't prioritise taking our ID or officially checking us in; instead, they showed us to our room and told us to enjoy dinner. The following day we went down first thing to go through the admin, and again, they told us not to worry. This interaction sums up the vibe at the lodge, relaxed, and guests have a deep sense of trust and respect. We very much valued this, as we were travelling with our daughter.

Inspired by traditional Berber architecture, the lodge's design showcased intricate zellige tiles, ornate woodwork, and vibrant textiles that transported us to a different era. The attention to detail was evident, from the meticulously adorned common areas to the tastefully furnished rooms. We loved hanging out on the low sofas with our shoes off, playing card games and quickly checking emails, given that you only have internet access from these spaces.

We looked forward to breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. Lunch is served in the luscious garden and consists of a mix of Moroccan and Mediterranean dishes. Going to the lodge for just the food is worth it, as it's quite the experience. Green beans, cauliflower bites, grilled chicken and homemade bread were on the menu one day we dined in the garden. At night the setting is intimate with the twinkle from flickering candles on the tables outside and the sounds of birds as the team served lamb tagine, vegetable soup and cous cous.

This is the place you stay at for a fully immersive experience. As we approached the village by car, we saw school children with rucksacks, and dogs lingering around, as we dipped up and down on the rugged roads. There are sheep close to the lodge, which if you go for a nearby walk, you’ll see guided by a shepherd in traditional attire. To say time stays still here is an understatement, hence why it is a fantastic place if you need a pause.
