We were captivated by the hotel's exquisite design and attention to detail from arrival. For example, the arches in the majestic hotel lobby area, illuminated by beautiful light fixtures as you walk out onto the seafront, make it easy to reimagine the original chapel of what was originally a sanatorium.
Unlike some other bustling coastal destinations in Catalonia, at Le Méridien Ra in Calafell, guests need not worry about securing a sunlounger on the prime spot of the beach. The hotel goes above and beyond to accommodate every guest, ensuring ample space and comfort for everyone to enjoy the sandy shores. This makes the location easier than other beach towns, such as Sitges, attracting a high volume of tourists in the peak months. Calefell is also a 35-minute journey from Barcelona, giving guests the option to visit for the day as they use Le Méridien Ra as a base.

The suites at Le Méridien Ra are simply masterful. Boasting stunning sea views, they transport you to a world of tranquillity and Mediterranean charm. The tasteful decor and spaciousness of the rooms create a sense of serenity, inviting you to relax and unwind in luxury. The hotel's pockets of contemporary artwork reflect the vibrant beach vibes reminiscent of Miami. These artistic touches add a touch of sophistication and style to the overall ambience, enhancing the overall experience.
One of the standout features of this resort is its thoughtful amenities for families. Breakfast at Le Méridien Ra is a delightful experience. It offers breathtaking sea views from San Salvador beach on the lower floor, creating the perfect backdrop for a morning feast. Lunch and dinner options include either buffet or a la carte at the D.O. restaurant, with the latter offering twists on Catalan classics such as the canelones. The intimate space has impeccable service and an excellent food and drink menu.
What makes this hotel special is its fascinating origins and nod to it, with the new services at the spa. In 1929 Alfonso XIII inaugurated the Maritime Sanatorium of San Juan de Dios, a sanctuary for wellness was built to accommodate patients with respiratory difficulties since the area is well known for the beneficial properties from sunlight, which was used as light therapy for tuberculisis and level of iodine content in the water. Today the hotel has a spa dedicated to making guests feel at ease, renewed and rejuvenated, all complemented by a sensational stay and luscious gardens. Head to the top floor to enjoy the solarium after a few circuits in the spa and finish with a drink on the lounger with a stunning sea view.
We particularly enjoyed strolling along the beach promenade and exploring the nearby fishermen's houses during our stay. Imbibing the local atmosphere, we relished the opportunity to sip a refreshing vermouth among the friendly locals, immersing ourselves in the authentic Catalan culture.
