On the corner of a cobbled street in the Andalusian white town of Vejer de la Frontera, you’ll find Casa Bonhomía – a new guesthouse setting off-beaten new standards in the traditional and lively town. The Netzes are a Dutch family seeking a new venture, and after acquiring the former noble building, they decided to convert the original building to a guesthouse. The project is a family one, with their children also contributing to the Casa Bonhomía brand, from interior design to layout and graphic design. During the renovation project of the 1860 classical building, the family worked with local ironmongers, floorers, plumbers, and more. The guesthouse needed to pair modern features with traditional aspects and craftsmanship.
Upon entering the casa, you are immediately and unexpectedly immersed into bold graphics and colours complemented by original tiled flooring. The ceilings are high and there are two floors that feature 6 rooms, all with a contemporary design and embodying traditional touches. We were fortunate to stay in room 1, a majestic space with an open shower, freestanding bathtub by Badeloft and incredible green vistas of Vejer’s surrounding countryside from the windows. The gold embossed mosaic tiles adjacent to the bathtub, minimalist furniture, and prints from curated textiles all call for an eclectic and contemporary stay in picturesque Vejer. The Filodesign four poster bed is centre stage and even has lighting integrated within it, allowing guests to stay in bed and manage bedtime lighting with ease. Such details are a credit to daughter, Valerie Netze behind Studio Valerie. The original tiled floors, historical beams and French windows have equally been respected and carefully restored in the other rooms. All rooms playfully incorporate high-quality linen by Mae Engelgeer and pretty tiled wet-rooms.
At the time of our stay, breakfast wasn’t yet provided, but this will be available to guests shortly. As the hip Andaluz guesthouse is in a prime location, several bars and cafes exist to purchase a local bite on a terrace or return to Casa Bonhomía. We did the latter and enjoyed our delicious morning spread on the large rooftop terrace. The views from the rooftop are breathtaking, and the pops of colour from the pallets upcycled for the seating frame, Moroccan-influenced rugs and sun-blazed terracotta plant pots show the continuous design flair from the Netze family, reinforcing the indoors to the outdoors. The area also makes for an ideal space to unwind with a glass of wine while watching the sunset against Vejer’s green, idyllic hills.
An intimate spa will open in February next year, allowing guests to relax and be pampered thoroughly. This is in addition to a communal space that will act as a simple shared point for meeting others or for feeling at ease. Lastly, a shared kitchen is currently in the works, allowing guests to rustle up their breakfast or a quick bite during their stay.
