In the heart of Marseille, just a stone’s throw from the bustling port, Hotel La Relève is a hidden gem that effortlessly blends vintage charm with a modern edge. This boutique guesthouse is anything but ordinary—think retro furnishings, bold colour palettes, and an atmosphere that transports you to a different era. With an aesthetic that feels part Mediterranean retreat, part stylish 1970s throwback, La Relève is a destination in itself.

Its location is equally enticing, surrounded by some of the city’s best independent bakeries, a lively taqueria, and a well-stocked supermarket—perfect for those who love to explore local flavours. Whether you’re starting your day with a fresh pastry or winding down with a drink at the guesthouse’s beloved restaurant, La Relève introduces you to Marseille’s vibrant spirit.

OUR STORY

Upon arrival, we had an amusing start, navigating the key box system—something we aren’t often used to! But once inside, any initial fuss faded. Our blue suite welcomed us with a cosy yet stylish vibe, defined by a striking blue scalloped bedspread, a heritage-inspired headboard, and playful palm tree-shaped lights. The space is both nostalgic and modern, with low-hung pendant lighting adding an intimate glow.

The defining feature? The blue-and-white striped curtains elegantly separating the bathroom from the main space, reinforcing the playful retro theme. The bathroom itself is a true showstopper, with curved wooden accents framing deep blue tiles and a grand, freestanding bathtub. The terracotta-tiled floors extend throughout, grounding the space in Mediterranean charm.

We also had a peek into another suite, which shared the same daring approach—rich colours, antique details, and a sense of nostalgia blended with modern touches.

La Relève may not come with extras like a minibar or TV (fine for us), but what it lacks in amenities, it more than makes up for in character. The guesthouse is a stylish companion to its restaurant, which is a well-loved local hotspot. Whether you come for the food or the stay, La Relève embodies Marseille’s effortless cool.
