RockRose Melides

Open since spring 2026, Rockrose is the work of visual artist Marta Alvim and her partner Vasco Maya: a rammed-earth house on a private hilltop above Melides, sitting within 10 hectares of native cork oaks, strawberry trees, and the wild shrub the property is named for. They found the land before they had a plan for it, drawn in by the particular quality of its stillness. When much of Portugal felt crowded, Melides remained strikingly quiet. On a hillside facing the ocean, they chose the plot instinctively.

The architecture is by Manuel Aires Mateus, and this is his first ground-up rammed-earth residence. The brief was specific: thick-walled and austere, generous in its spaces and light — conceived as a tool for self-regulation and inner transformation. Marta’s research in neuroaesthetics, the study of how beauty and sensory environments transform the brain, runs through every decision: the 60-centimetre walls that regulate temperature without conventional air conditioning, the lioz stone, Venetian stucco, and handmade terracotta from the Santa Catarina workshop in the Algarve, the five suites that open directly onto the landscape. It took six years to complete. Rockrose is available exclusively as a private hire — one group, no other guests.

Wellness here is understated and considered. An Ayurvedic therapist works with ROWSE products; meditation, breathwork, horse riding, and beach excursions are available on request, with a longevity programme in development alongside a Lisbon clinic. Breakfasts are built around three menus by French gut-health nutritionist Florence Rolando; dinners come from TwoPack Kitchen, a local outfit whose wood-burning approach aligns closely with the house’s ethos. A bespoke tea blend, created with Companhia Portuguesa do Chá and inspired by the rockrose plant, quietly anchors the daily rhythm.
