Postcards from Meknes

Meknes, Morocco, is a city of monumental grandeur, blending 17th-century Hispanic-Moorish architecture with the elegance of the Islamic and European styles of the Maghreb. Enclosed by high walls with grand gates, the city’s historical significance is palpable, especially as it was the first great achievement of the Alaouite dynasty, the current Moroccan royal family.

While not overflowing with tourist attractions, Meknes holds a deep historical value. It was once the capital of Morocco under Sultan Moulay Ismail before this title passed to Marrakech. Most visitors here are backpackers or road-trippers, but many overlook the city’s pivotal role in shaping Moroccan history.

The Sahrij Swani (Basin of the Norias) offers a tranquil introduction to the city. Locals gather here on weekends to cool off by the water. Just behind the lake are the ruins of grain silos within the Royal Palace walls, once used to preserve food in a temperature-controlled environment within walls up to 7 metres thick.

One of Meknes’ standout landmarks is the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail—a peaceful resting place of the sultan, and one of the few sacred sites in Morocco open to non-Muslims. Its serene courtyards lead to a lavish tomb showcasing stunning Moroccan craftsmanship, while the vibrant exterior is a sight to behold with its intricate patterns and colours.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Meknes is known for its historical treasures, including its monumental gates, granaries, and stables. The city also offers excellent value for visitors, from affordable shopping to attractions like the Dar Jamai Museum (10 DH/1 Euro).

The atmosphere in Meknes is relaxed, with friendly locals and laid-back salespeople. With fewer tourists, it’s easy to immerse in the local culture, enjoying the beauty of the city at your own pace.
