Mini Guide: Agios Nikolaos

by Jeremy

Agios Nikolaos, on Crete’s stunning eastern coast, offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty, artistic flair, and relaxed island living. Its charm lies in its tranquil pace, striking landscapes, and a deep sense of Cretan culture. From the folklore-inspired Lake Voulismeni to the town’s vibrant waterfront dotted with local cafes, there’s an understated elegance that makes it a standout destination.

Known for its artistic energy, the town’s streets and even its luxury accommodations, such as the iconic Minos Beach Art Hotel, showcase a commitment to creativity and craftsmanship. Agios Nikolaos captures the essence of Crete while offering its own unique charm—a perfect balance of authentic experiences and peaceful indulgence.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Crete offers an extraordinary blend of bustling tourist hubs and tranquil villages, and Agios Nikolaos perfectly embodies this contrast. The town feels both peaceful and artistically vibrant, thanks to its dynamic street art culture and the installations at the seafront Minos Beach Art Hotel. Walking through the narrow streets of the town centre, you’ll come across churches scattered throughout, including the small church of Agios Nikolaos, which gave the town its name. Agios Nikolaos is uniquely surrounded by three water bodies: the port and lake, Kitroplatia Beach, and the Marina.

One of the highlights of the town is Lake Voulismeni, a folklore-inspired lake that connects to the sea via a narrow inlet. Its edges are dotted with cafes, tavernas, and restaurants frequented by both locals and visitors. For an even better view, take the steps up the cliff for stunning panoramas of the lake. A short walk from the lake brings you to the Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos, housed in one of the town’s oldest buildings. This museum offers an intimate look at Cretan heritage through traditional handicrafts, multi-coloured rugs, vintage cooking tools, and embroidered textiles.

Another way to immerse yourself in the local culture is by visiting the Cretan Olive Oil Farm. Book your visit online to enjoy discounts, and choose from several experiences, including a guided tour or a cooking class. We tried making dolmades with fresh grapevine leaves and tzatziki while enjoying shots of raki, Crete’s iconic grape-based spirit. Guests are guided by knowledgeable hosts like Nick, who speaks multiple languages and ensures you feel part of the experience.

For history enthusiasts, the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos is worth exploring. Though small, it’s home to fascinating artefacts from all over Eastern Crete, including finds from the Mochlos cemetery and the Zakros palace. For those looking to explore beyond the town, book ferry tickets at Nostos Tours on Roussou Koundourou Street to visit nearby destinations like Elounda, Spinalonga Island, or even the island of Santorini.

If you’re a beach lover, Agios Nikolaos has plenty to offer. Kitroplatia Beach, a mix of sand and shingle, is located centrally, while Ammos Beach near the marina is another sandy option. For something quieter, Ammoudi and Havania Beaches are just a short drive away. Almiros and Ammoudara Beaches provide organised facilities, making them perfect for families. Locals also recommend Plaka Pebble Beach and Kalor Horio for a more tranquil experience.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Agios Nikolaos has a vibrant culinary scene with options to suit all tastes. One of our favourite spots was Piato (ΠΙΑΤΟ), known for its exceptional views of the sea, authentic Cretan dishes, and a wide selection of local wine. Among the highlights were the fried courgettes, dolmades, hummus, zucchini flower wraps, octopus, shrimp, and fresh seafood. This restaurant is a favourite with locals, and anyone you ask will likely point you in its direction.

Another memorable dining experience was at Pelagos, a charming restaurant set in a garden shaded by trees. It occupies a standalone neoclassical building and serves excellent seafood, including seabreams, Greek salad, and a selection of appetisers. Keep an eye out for the friendly cats that often nap nearby while you enjoy your meal. For something a little different, Faros restaurant on Kitroplatia Beach stands out for its seafood menu, authentic flavours, and warm hospitality.

Events like the town’s summer music festivals or traditional Cretan dancing performances at the lake are worth experiencing. Seasonal festivals and local religious celebrations also showcase the town’s lively spirit, blending age-old traditions with contemporary charm.

WHERE TO STAY

For accommodation, Agios Nikolaos has a range of options to suit every type of traveller. The luxurious Minos Beach Art Hotel offers an exceptional stay with its waterfront art installations and serene atmosphere. Those seeking boutique charm will find plenty of cosy hotels that reflect the town’s artistic flair and tranquil vibe.
