THE GRAND PIGALLE

Old-world glamour and retro charm harmonize in this cocktail bar-cum-hotel concept in the heart of Paris’ rising SoPi neighbourhood. Not far from the Moulin Rouge in the city’s former Red Light District are a maze of streets hiding natural wine bars, up-and-coming restaurants, and nightclubs. Smack in the heart of this quarter sits the Grand Pigalle Hotel. A lively bar in the hotel lobby, serving signature cocktails and small plates, provides a focal point for this chic hotel.

Imagined as a “bed and beverage” concept by the Experimental Group, the Grand Pigalle Hotel opened its doors during Paris’ fashion week in March 2015. Following the success of projects like the Experimental Cocktail Club, Paris’ first and well-loved cocktail bar, and similar bars in New York and London, the Experimental Group wanted to channel their eight years of hospitality experience into an original project.

Styled by designer Dorothée Meilichzon, known for her low-lit, softly chic mixture of Victorian and Art Deco design, the Grand Pigalle has a dark and clubby atmosphere. Meilichzon collaborates frequently with the Experimental Group and runs her own Parisian design agency CHZON.

OUR STORY

Expect old-world luxury with the modernist decor. Brass lamps with pull-chains, eye-catching wallpaper, and custom carpets with an abstract martini glass motif add to the charm. Upon check-in, guests are handed a brass key with leather tassels instead of a plastic card. The hotel’s 37 rooms are equipped with custom-made toiletries and minibars stocked with bottled cocktails from the hotel bar. Deluxe rooms also feature custom-blended Cru espresso and a few even house balconies with beautiful views of Pigalle’s streets along the base of Montmartre.

The hotel lobby doubles as a lounge where Parisians and in-the-know international travellers crowd the bar each evening. On warm nights, the floor-to-ceiling French doors are thrown open and small window tables are pushing partway onto the sidewalk, opening the bar to passerby. Friendly bartenders mix classic and contemporary cocktails and are happy to tell you the story behind the Manhattan Sour.

For a true Parisian night out, the hotel will drive guests to the Experimental Group’s other cocktail bars around the city in a restored vintage Citroën DS.
