Roberta’s Society, Aarhus: A Social Hub in a Former Library

Kolpin Hotels — the group behind Sanders and Helenekilde Badehotel in Denmark — has opened Roberta’s Society in Aarhus, housed in the city’s former main library, a piece of 1930s Functionalist architecture on Møllegade. Part hotel, part social hub, it is unlike anything else in the portfolio. If you’ve been following our coverage of Denmark, this feels like the next chapter.

The building’s original purpose as a place for knowledge and community is something Creative Director Alexander Kolpin has deliberately preserved. Private rooms and dormitories sit alongside DreamBoxes of his own design, a lobby bar that functions as the house living room, and the Cantina: a family-style dining space built around shared plates, seasonal menus, and the group’s own Kolpin Family Wines and Berties Brew beer.

What gives Roberta’s Society its character is the cultural programme at its core. Roberta’s Stage, converted from the building’s old locker room, hosts jazz nights, open mic evenings, and intimate concerts. Locals and travellers move through the same spaces. The leopard print carpets are not a mistake.

Location adds to the appeal: Mølleparken as its front garden, ARoS Museum visible from the windows, and the Latin Quarter — Aarhus’ oldest neighbourhood, all cobblestones and indie shops — directly behind. The train station is a ten-minute walk.
