sketch – London’s Historical and Instagrammable Restaurant

Sketch, one of London’s prettiest restaurants, has a manifesto that reaches great heights with its extravagant bars and restaurants making up what is central Mayfair’s most significant endeavour yet. The Grade II* listed building on 9 Conduit Street, was designed by James Wyatt in 1779 as a private residence of James Viner. Different instalments flow organically throughout the building – The Gallery, Lecture Room, Parlour, Glade and East Bar – all of their unique themed spaces with different atmospheres.

The Gallery is famed for its afternoon tea, and was previously a pink palace, with many making reservations to get a photo there. In February 2022, the renowned British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA and project architect India Mahdavi transformed the iconic London venue sketch with a new installation of artworks and interiors. The change set a new tone for the restaurant, which showcased witty art from the likes of David Shrigley and Martin Creed

Dome-topped high ceilings remain, though there are notes of yellow in the interior design. Guests will find several references to sunshine and newness as part of the new concept, and it exudes elegance and is warmer in tone.

The Gallery still offers a Champagne Afternoon Tea, which includes a fine selection of caviar and quail eggs, dozens of finger sandwiches, an assortment of specially baked cakes, scones and jam with a Pommery Rosé to accompany the meal. There’s also a children’s menu for those brave enough to bring little ones.

Curiously and not a secret anymore, the toilets have different egg-shaped pods for your privacy. You feel like you are in a 70’s science fiction dystopia or about to skyrocket into outer space!

We’d recommend everyone to try the quintessential English custom. Families, friends and tourists can happily enjoy a luxurious experience in London.
