Sublime Comporta, the property that did much to introduce Comporta to an international audience when it opened in 2014, is adding a significant new chapter this May. The expansion covers 43 villas and three central buildings spread across 51 hectares, sitting directly across from the original hotel. It’s substantial enough that Sublime has reorganised itself around two distinct wings: Terracotta, home to the original resort and its unhurried, sun-bleached spirit, and Sand, which brings new dining, wellness, and social spaces into the mix.
It’s a careful balancing act. Comporta’s appeal has always rested on what it isn’t: not the Algarve, not Ibiza, not overbuilt. The risk with any expansion of this scale is that the atmosphere gets diluted along with the footprint. Sublime appears aware of this; the two-wing structure feels like a deliberate attempt to keep the soul of the original intact while offering something broader for guests who want more. The Sand wing introduces an Italian restaurant, additional pool facilities, and a new events space, alongside the Portuguese debut of BeefBar.
Whether the balance holds is something only a stay will confirm. For now, it’s one of the more considered expansions in a destination that rewards restraint, and one of the most interesting openings among our favourite boutique stays in Portugal this year.
