Semproniana - Catalan restaurant and cooking workshop
Located in Barcelona's Eixample neighbourhood, we found a stirring culinary restaurant that goes by the name of Semproniana. Packed with locals, this traditional and creative space has had us wondering where we have been eating all these years!
The restaurant was actually an old editorial space, in which head chef and owner Ada Parellada along with her partners decided to replace the letters with cooking books and built a food empire for dreamers and foodies alike. The launch of Semproniana was only the start of a new beginning as many projects developed from its perseverance for Ada Parellada, one of the most acclaimed Catalan chefs, as she also packs her career with literature and cooking books, which her english version of Vanilla Salt can be bought online on Amazon.
When we first entered the restaurant, Ada Parellada was in her cute vintage-style kitchen cooking up another one of her pinnacle of dishes. After reading so much about the culinary space, we were really excited to see the lively and down to earth chef in person as she greeted us with a warm welcome. We were accompanied through a short, narrow passage with bright colourful mosaic floorings before we were seated in a glistening, wide space full of art, design and publishings.
We opted for the lunch menu of the day, which consists of a first plate, second plate, wine or water and a dessert. Our appetite was open to new flavours, so we had the: tomato soup with pistachio and black olives, a steamed dish of fresh vegetables, duck confit with pears and slices of apricots, hake with courgette and wild mushrooms, brownie in a pool of chocolate fudge and cream caramel flan with a coconut base. Every dish was consistent with contemporary ideas, with each one more exquisite than the last.
For those wanting to devour into more dishes and repeat at home, you can sign up for cooking classes, food training courses, activities, talks and workshops on their website. We will definitely be repeating the experience of eating in Semproniana again, but would love to also take our time to learn how to cook some of their famed dishes at one of their classes!
