Rudie's - Get your jerk on in Dalston, London
Dalston is that part of London that is rough round the edges but where those in the know, hang out. The area is brimming with boutique stores, upcoming design haunts, creative hairdressers and more - all juxtaposed with a melting pot of cultures with local Caribbean food stores, Indian restaurants, hipster bars and more. New in tow is Rudie's, a contemporary Jamaican restaurant that gives you another worthy reason to head to Stoke Newington road.
The aesthetic is refreshing, there's no cheesy references to Jamaica, just subtle nods paired with a minimalist look. Dishes are creative and have quirky twists such as the lobster patties. Then there is of course the jerk, which is pivotal to the restaurant. You can either choose chicken, lamb, vegetable or pork, so there is something for all. There are no shortcuts, with the meat being cooked in the drum - real style. If your tastebuds can handle it, go for the papaya sauce, otherwise the banana pepper is mild and then there's ketchup which is mild.
The yard classic is like a taste from back home, with succulent curry goat, delicious and nicely paired with rice and peas and their avocado, mango and coriander slaw. What is great about Rudie's is the offering of small plates. More than often at Jamaican restaurants you get one very complete meal, whereas here you pick your meat / fish and add sides - all of which makes it easier for sharing whilst dining with friends and family. We were quick to sample the different patties, tuck into some plantain and sample the cocktails doing the rounds at the table.
Speaking of which, for those partial to a bombastic cocktail, expect rum based cocktails created by local mixologists. Their "colony" has brandy from Jerez, Blackwell and Appel V/X rums, and you have to sample the "cool runnings", where Blackwell rum and spice mint and ginger take over. We say make your way to Dalston and sample the food from the island. The vibe is chilled, the crowd is mixed and the food is lip-smackingly delicious!
