Restaurant 2254 by Chef Nuncio Cona - Barcelona
Restaurant 2254 serves as the number of kilometres that separate Palermo from Barcelona by road, as it is where the head chef Chef Nuncio Cona originated from. This new restaurant opened as of early 2015, it pays homage to the Mediterranean coastline with Italian, French and Spanish cuisines.
The restaurant is full of allegories to the memory of its founders, both Chef's Nuncio Cona and General Manager (and wife) Irina. True values and life experiences are bedecked in every corner of this eating house. There is an indoor urban garden that covers the top part of a wall and the restaurant is serenaded with touching art works done by hand. The tables honour the chef's family, with each one named after a member. The long table in the centre is based solely on how big families tend to eat at gatherings, bringing the owners fond memories of his life in Sicily.
We love the flexibility the venue has with its different formats of delivery: a la carte, tasting menu Dúo, menus for groups and brunch. We opted for the Dúo tasting menu as we wanted the full experience and who are we kidding, there were 11 plates and amazing wine!
A good food impression was already made with the foie gras on a cone with chocolate and oranges. The combination was incredible and we loved the use of play in the presentation. The cappuccino with red prawns and sea urchins, equally creative and interesting with a delicious and strong flavour. Sicilian touches come together in dishes like the arugula salad with goat cheese, pistachios and dried tomatoes, which you will probably was devour like no other. Chef Nuncio's most definitely has an artistic flair and unique style when it comes to food. Experimental dishes such as the rigatoni with brandade (salt cod) used as a filling and a crispy catalan sausage on top, and octopus in a green curry with beans from Ganxet, are just a few examples of his culinary skills. We later discovered that the beans used in the curry can only be found in a little part of Catalonia, and it is actually not so easy to find in Barcelona city. The steak tartar is accompanied by not one, but three ice-creams to really bring out the flavour of the meat - sweet basil, mustard and almond. To finish our salt dishes, we had the cod confit with pine nuts. For dessert we recommend the seasonal fruit dish in Oleum Flumen olive oil and the hazelnut coulant with vanilla ice cream.
Every 3 months or season, the Dúo tasting menu changes. We are delighted to learn about this food haven in Barcelona. It is ideally situated in the Eixample district where all of the fun starts in the city!
