Book Restaurante - Oporto
***This establishment is now closed***
Literature happens to play a big part of our everyday lives, whether it is reading on holiday, whilst commuting or simply at home. The magic of Book Restaurante is that any one can feel right at home, after all there are shelves full of books and it is rather intimate. Out with the old, in with the new, this chic restaurant beautifully merges literature and gastronomy. Book allows you to reminisce on the good times while remembering the art of story telling in an elegant setting.
There is literally books everywhere: on the ceilings, stacked on shelves, on the receipt and even in the bathrooms. Not surprisingly though, this place occupies the space of an old, former library calles Avis, where the owner André Ribeiro and his father and grandfather bought it years ago. Deserving credibility and mention as well is the architect Pedro Trindade and the main chef of this place, João Mendes.
When we sat in the back of the restaurant, we were handed the menu inside The Historia da Filosofia book by the waiter. The idea is splendid and quite charming! As it was Easter we ordered a carrot soup for starters and had fried cod fish with rice for our main dishes. For dessert we had a delicious vanilla flan with a slight taste of caramel. Not too sweet and just perfect for a first day in town.
Good music and great cocktails are served every week day night. Rumor has it that the caipirinha with cloves and cinnamon is absolutely unmissable! Did we mention that chef João Mendes recommended dishes he cooks are his fantastic cod lasagna, green bean soup with meatballs or sausage cream with caramel!?
If it is Saturday, brunch can be served and we recommend typical dishes such as the "guts Oporto fashion". Do not panic about the guts, for João cooks up a wide selection of Portuguese meat and fish.
