Contemporary Catalan Art - Museu Can Framis

The extensive neighbourhood of Poblenou (Catalan for new village) straddles the old and new with its arty nooks, in addition to its ode to technology, which is why the 22@ District name came about. The Fundación Vila Casas museum is located in the 22@ District, an area where Barcelona City Hall has promoted a full redevelopment of a former factory/heavy industry zone by substituting premises with light service industries.

Can Framis, is the latest of the Fundació Vila Casas museum. Opened in April 2009, it consists of over 300 works of art from both born and living artists in the region of Catalonia. When making your way to Can Framis, the chimney of an old factory made up of tiles stands out above the rest. This was an actual factory built at the end of the 19th century, originally owned and named by the Framis family. As industrialisation came to a halt, the chimney still resembles the industry of the area it once was.

The mission of the Fundació Vila Casas is to promote contemporary Catalan art from the 1960s to the present day in the disciplines of painting, photography, and sculpture. The collection is divided between three museums and two spaces for temporary exhibitions. Each museum exhibits works from the permanent collection, with a new selection made every year, as well as temporary exhibitions.

BAAS architectural practice, famous for its heritage-listed constructions, gave the museum Can Framis a revamp. The project consisted of restoring the two current factory buildings and constructing a new one that linked them, coinciding with the site of another former warehouse which - as a whole - now forms a courtyard, paved with stones recovered from the former factory, which is the main entrance to the museum. Visitors get to enter from the bottom of the building, through semi-lit areas which light up to showcase the exhibited pieces. The renovation of Can Framis was directed by the architect Jordi Badia, founder and director of BAAS along with his team.
