La Malcontenta by Casamar

Maria and Quim Casellas (chef at Michelin star restaurant Casamar) have proudly opened the year at La Malcontenta Hotel & Restaurant with succulent new dishes, under the precise, attentive and professional care of Chef Quim Casellas, the cuisine is nothing but beyond excellence.

La Malcontenta is a boutique luxury 5 star hotel, previously an old fortified farm house in Palamós, Girona. The restaurant is actually in a separate building, on the same premises as the hotel. It is an ideal location to bask in the luscious scenic views and the journey itself takes you through never-ending roads through green paths that lead to tiny fishing villages and the beautiful Castell beach of the Costa Brava.

You must try the prawns when eating here, as the major port in the town of Palamós is one of the last remaining fishing fleets in this part of the coast and they are said to be one of the best. Cava (sparkling wine of Denominación de Origen status, most of which is produced in Catalonia) of course, is also a worthy option for pairing with your meal. Our entrée dish was pot cod brandade with mini onions and spinach. Perhaps the most impressive of all dishes, as it was served in a plant pot - a nod to it's surroundings. The cod had a slight taste of garlic and fine olive oil that gave it a nice balance and depth. Mini confit potatoes with bacon, eggs and juicy roast chicken coop, candied, simmered with thyme, pork and creamy yolk was neatly presented and executed. The warm leek cannelloni with crayfish, beurre blanc (french for white butter) and langoustine tails took our palates to another planet! Remember the classic dish from Joan Bosch (symbol of Catalán cooking, 30 Michelin stars)? Well we had his famous rice with squid ink, cuttlefish noodles, clams and seaweed emulsion! It was a great way to finish the salted dishes just before dessert. Dessert was a foam cheese in a jar with honey, limoncello (Italian lemon liqueur), peach crumble and thyme.

Without needing any other motive to go to the wild coast of Catalonia, we can easily say that having this type of fine dining with its service and views is beyond a privilege. We would highly recommend this place for any occasion and it is a perfect excuse to visit Palamós.
