DF/Mexico Diner - London
You only have to look at the success of Wahaca to see that Mexican food is in demand and need not be a little sitio in a dark and unsettling street. Contemporary design, modern fixtures and POS units can intertwine to create an inviting restaurant for all and this is what we thought when we visited DF Mexico. I mean we don't need many excuses to go to head over to the Truman Brewery, but we sure found another one with this restaurant at the very top end of Hanbury Street.
From the bold graphics, clean lines and simple lighting scheme, you know you haven't walked in to your average Mexican food place. The menu is great, there is a selection of tacos, burritos bursting with lots of fillings, and even burgers for those hungry for more. Our mouths were watering as soon as we saw the colourful menu, which we deliberated over some time, as they have an excellent selection of modern Mexican dishes. We went ahead with fish tacos, which were not only much bigger than expected but downright tasty! The crunch from the panko crumbed cod, along with the chipotle may and red slaw, most certainly kept us quiet. Order from the grill and choose between grilled chicken or steak (chilli rub), both accompanied with fries or red rice.
For those that like to create their own dishes, there is the option to order a DIY Mexican board where people can make their own tacos from a selection of tortillas, sauced corn chips, fresh guacamole and more. The presentation is second to none and you even have the option to order at the self-service counter, which the guys in our group were very keen to do. We love the fact that the drinks are bottomless, and include hibicus, horchata and other drinks in addition to the usual sodas on tap.
A kids menu is also available with a simplified menu of tacos, grills and tortas. They are £5, come with a soft drink and even feature a game, to keep the little ones occupied. As it is just by Brick lane, DF/Mexico is also ideal for afterwork shenanigans. You can enjoy Mexican beers, frozen margaritas or wine before heading out.
