B Restaurant alla vecchia pescheria - Murano, Italy
While taking our time to explore Venice properly, we discovered that there’s much more to the island than the artfully rich city centre. More than 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges surround Venice, most are inhabitable or off-limits to visitors. Murano is an exception, as it is where glass has been made genuinely for over 700 years. We decided to stay in Murano for 3 reasons: Murano Palace, Murano's fame for glass production and the splendid B Restaurant 5 minutes away from our hotel stay.
Owned by the son of Cesare Giordani (GM of Murano Palace), we were curious to take on the recommendations from him personally. B Restaurant was born next to Berengo Studio, which represents one of the most innovative efforts to encourage the use of glass as an expression of contemporary artistic requirements. The restaurant is in a petite square where generations of visitors have previously enjoyed nothing but a good time. Embedded in a familiar and comfortable setting, the waiters welcome you with sympathy and warmth as the style of cooking has the same attribute in every meal.
The chef prepares a Venetian cuisine, innovative and contemporary but always inspired by the tradition and attention to local products: fresh fish, vegetables and homemade desserts. Some of the spontaneous dishes that caught our attention were sardines with caramelised onions on polenta, stockfish mousse bruschetta and scallops, pasta in clams and mussels, tallarines with lobster, pannacotta with red fruits, vegetarian pizza and spider crab noodles. Within a few minutes of being seated, we knew that Murano is not just committed to the glass industry, but also share a passion for food as well.
For starters, we had a salad and ordered prosecco to drink as we were saving space for our main dishes. The spinach cannelloni and the grand B plate were brought in shortly afterwards. The grand B plate consists of an amazing assortment of fried calamari, squid, lobster and polenta. To finish the meal we had the best creamy tiramisu, followed by coffee.
A remarkable experience was had, everything from the reservation to getting social with the staff was really good. The dishes are constantly renewed and linked to the seasonality of the products of the land. B Restaurant is child-friendly, romantic and provides a terrace for the warmer days. There is a bar area if you want to go after-hours, as well as appetisers for a quick bite. The industrial chic look of the restaurant works perfectly well to celebrate weddings and ceremonies with families and friends. We were joyful to have stayed in this part of the lagoon.
